Martina’s journey, from a Bachelor in Biology, to a Master in Food Systems, to delving into R&D and Quality Control of Alternative Proteins
The Master in Food Systems is quite an academic and experience-packed adventure. But what happens after graduation?
Martina, tell us about your post-graduation journey. How did the Master in Food Systems pave the way for your career?
Martina Celli from Italy: ‘In 2021, I proudly graduated as part of the inaugural Master in Food Systems group. Following graduation, I had a specific job in mind within the alternative proteins sector. After connecting with an Italian company, Food Evolution at a food event in Milan, I secured an internship in their R&D department. When my manager left the company, I took on a more independent role, delving into the technical aspects of R&D, quality control, and certifications. I worked there until September 2023, after which I decided to take a sabbatical to explore new horizons.’
Looking back at the Master in Food Systems Programme, how would you describe your experience?
‘As a biology bachelor with no prior experience in the food world, the MFS Programme provided me with diverse perspectives, a choice of curriculums, and exposure to different universities and classmates. The versatility of the programme allowed me to explore various facets of the food industry, aligning with my curiosity for different subjects.’
“After graduation, the active alumni community provides a valuable network for job searches and sharing experiences.”
Have you been able to apply what you learned in the MFS Programme to your current job?
‘Definitely, especially in the realm of quality control, microbiological safety and other safety aspects of food. The programme, conducted in English, boosted my teamwork and project management skills, particularly during the intensive two-month summer school. The Master also instilled in me the ability to adapt quickly to new challenges. In the relatively new and small company that hired me, I had the opportunity to further develop my project management skills through trial and error.’
Would you recommend the Master in Food Systems Programme to other students?
‘Without a doubt, especially given the chance to go abroad, which I unfortunately missed due to Covid restrictions. However, the professors were very supportive and open to online discussions. After graduation, the active alumni community provides a valuable network for job searches and sharing experiences. Although my physical presence was limited to 10 days in Stuttgart and the graduation event in Leuven, the programme's impact is undeniable.’
Why did you choose your job in the alternative protein industry?
‘The role aligned perfectly with my aspirations. I am fascinated by the alternative protein industry, being a vegetarian myself, and sought a company committed to sustainability. Now, as I transition careers, I am looking for a position that offers flexibility and a good work-life balance. I'm taking my time to carefully plan the next step and explore new opportunities.’
